There have been many successful companies from India, the latest one to join the fray is Zomato. There have been many who later followed the suite, but none have been as successful as this one has been. It has been a revelation since its inception. Food is something which is a basic necessity for everyone, and people love to dine out. For foodies, getting good food is like reaching another level of their lives. And that’s how zomato has impacted globally. Started as foodiebay.com in 2010, it has come a long way since its inception.
Needless to say, but waiting for food is something which every foodie hates. When they are hungry they need it RIGHT AWAY or they turn into nothing but ‘hangry’ (Yes, that’s hungry + angry). While some get frustrated waiting in queue to order food, others just can’t help but keep calm till their turn comes. However, there are another lot of people who will find a solution to this eternal crisis and create a platform to do away with hurdles to a happy meal. Deepinder Goyal, Pankaj Chaddah are such names who have been successful in doing that, and at the same time helping food lovers around the world reach out to their one and only solace — food! If you did not guess it right till now, then let’s unfold the mystery. We are talking about the food search engine ‘Zomato’, and we won’t be wrong if we say this is the ‘Google’ of food.
What do you do when you want to order food from outside? You search for the menu or menus, choose your restaurant then choose what you like and order, right? These were the times when we had to get out of our houses in search for the perfect eatery, with a hope to find solutions to all our doubts. Yeah, well times have changed; we now have a directory similar to a telephone directory, but only to be far more advanced than it called “Zomato.com”.
‘Zomato’ is that place through which you end up gaining a lot of weight…and no it’s not a gym offering a special weight-gain program! It’s a ‘one stop solution’ to all your cravings for food, alcohol, pubs, etc., or in other words, an online temple where you end up going every now-n-then but for one major selfish reason called “food”.
Zomato initially named as Foodiebay was started in 2008 by Mr. Deepinder Goyal. It is a restaurant searching platform providing in-depth details with autonomous reviews and ratings. Foodiebay, the initial name was changed to Zomato in November 2010 to increase their reach among people.
To differentiate themselves from their competitors, Zomato concentrated on adding approx. 18,000 new places to eat from. Along with they also decorated many special features, such as pointed to particular dishes or opening times”.
To be the largest resource in food supply market, Zomato bought urbanspoon, a leading restaurant service providing a portal for $52 million to enter US, Canada, and Australia to leverage local insights and experience and to expand their business in overseas seeing the future goal and objective.
Zomato’s success lies in the quality of the talent it hires. The company looks for people with the attitude towards doing the unconventional and doing it right. This passion in people is what fuels the whole company and Zomato have benefited heavily from the talent it has chosen to hire.
“Today, we have some of the smartest people on board. We look for culture fits – for people who think ahead, have an attitude to hustle and take ownership of their work. Each person in the organization has a fire in them to get things done. We look for culture fits more than a glossy CV. What we do differently is that we consider ourselves to be a global start-up and that’s what helps us scale greater heights. For us, however much we achieve, we’re 1% done. Our destination is a moving target. This helps bring perspective to our work.”
Looking for the talent is not an easy task by any measure and Zomato has always gone the extra mile to ensure their hiring strategies are the best of the lot. From code-weeks to leadership programs that reach out to talented cream in the industry, Zomato has become the creative gold mine.
“We do everything from campus hiring to networking, and internal referrals to hiring programs to find the best talent for tech, sales, marketing, content, and operations roles.
“Finding technically and culturally compatible talent isn’t always easy, but we keep innovating on our hiring techniques in order to counter the problems we face. Through the Trial Week and the Leadership Program, we have in fact connected with some seriously talented people. Trial Week was launched to solve the problem of recruiting engineers. Techies work for a week with our tech team in Delhi on projects that are part of our development roadmap. At the end of the week, those we see fitting in are offered a position in the team.”, he adds.
Zomato success has inspired many startups and they have already set a benchmark for the industry to follow. Sometimes, it’s your love which will lead you to success. This time it was the love of food.
